Mechanical properties of avian eggs

Muitiscale Systems Lab (MSL) , department of mechanical engineering, NTU

Professor, Jia-Yang Juang

Introduction

The structure of avian egg is unique because it must satisfy several conflicting demands: the eggshell must be strong enough to prevent it from breaking easily, on the other hand, it must not be too strong so that the hatching can't break out of the egg.

To understand the mechanical properties of eggshells, we collect eggs from Taipei Zoo and do some experiments and simulation. The details are as follows.

Compression test

Conduct compression test on avian eggs to get mechanical properties of eggshell. According to the relations between given loading and displacement, we can get the stiffness of eggshells.
